Golf groups, and the house detail nobody asks about until the first tee time

October 13, 2026 · by the Coachella Splash team

We get a specific kind of call every year once the mornings turn tolerable again: four guys booking a golf trip who are actually bringing their partners, or their kids, or both. The tee time is the plan. The other fourteen hours of the day are not, and that's usually where the trip works or doesn't.

This valley has more courses within twenty minutes of each other than anywhere else we've lived, which is exactly why golf groups rarely stay golf-only anymore. Someone's spouse wants the pool. Someone's teenager wants to sleep until eleven. By the time a group is renting a house instead of splitting between hotel rooms, it's already stopped being a golf trip and started being a group trip that happens to have golf in it.

The morning splits the group before anyone's had coffee

Tee times out here run early for good reason, even in the cooler months — courses are busiest and prettiest before the day gets going, and nobody wants to be standing on the ninth hole once the sun is properly up. That means your golfers are gone by seven with the good car, the cooler, and most of the trunk space, while everyone else is still asleep.

Figure out before you arrive, not on the first morning, who's driving and who's staying put. A group of eight with one SUV and four sets of clubs doesn't have a second car left for whoever wakes up wanting breakfast somewhere other than the kitchen. If your group splits roughly in half every morning, you need the car count to match, which is a question worth asking us directly rather than guessing from the photos on a listing.

What the ones staying back actually need

The golfers have a plan. The rest of the house needs one too, and it's rarely an activity — it's just a house that already works before anyone's had their coffee. A pool that doesn't need the sun to warm up, a kitchen big enough that breakfast isn't a bottleneck, somewhere shaded to read before it's hot. None of that requires planning. It requires the right-sized house to begin with, which is the actual reason this works better than a hotel: everyone has somewhere to be that isn't a lobby.

When the golfers get back

Four hours outside, even in a mild month, is four hours outside. They'll come back wanting a shower before anything else, then the pool, then food, roughly in that order and not open to negotiation. This is where a bigger house earns its keep in a way that's easy to undersell beforehand — enough bathrooms that four sweaty guys aren't queued behind each other, and a kitchen that can turn out lunch for everyone at once instead of two separate rounds.

The two groups usually meet back up around the pool by early afternoon, which is the same reconvening pattern we see with any big group that splits its day — golf is just the thing that splits this particular one.

The part nobody thinks about until the clubs are in the driveway

Eight sets of clubs, a few pull carts, and the bags everyone insists they need for "just in case" take up more room than people expect, and they need to live somewhere dry that isn't the middle of the entryway for a week. Garage space and storage vary house to house, so this is worth a direct question when you call rather than an assumption from a floor plan. We'd rather tell you honestly which house has room for your bags than have you find out at check-in that they're stacked against the wall for the week.

Booking it like a group trip, not a golf trip

The houses that handle this best aren't necessarily the ones closest to a course — they're the ones big enough that a mixed group doesn't feel like it's choosing between two different vacations. If you're planning one of these, tell us the real shape of your group: how many are playing, how many aren't, how many cars, how many sets of clubs. That's exactly the kind of detail a marketplace listing can't answer and we can, before you've booked anything. Call us with the real headcount and we'll point you at the house that holds all of it, not just the golfers.
